WE ARE NOT MEANT TO BE SEEN

Civitella Ranieri, Umbertide, Italy

October, 2022

WE ARE NOT MEANT TO BE SEEN – ANGELA, a multi-media exploration of local labor, tradition, womanhood, and their relationship to the present. Collaborated with locals from Umbertide to gather wool, thread, and tobacco as well as stories, songs, and conversations. At the center of the project was the breuccio, a piece of red silk sewn into a sachet to hold coarse salt; breucci are shared between women to protect from evil spirits. The project grew out of our conversations with Angela and  came out of a desire to give new meaning to symbolic objects that belong to the past.
